Respiratory therapists evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing
or other cardiopulmonary disorders that may include chroic asthma, COPD/emphysema,
chronic aspiration/pneumonia, heart disease, and stroke.
To treat patients, respiratory therapists use oxygen or oxygen mixtures,
chest physiotherapy, and aerosol medications. Respiratory therapists monitor the
patients' condition and function as a consultant to the doctor or nurse
practitioner to adjust the rehabilitation care and treatment administered.
Respiratory therapists monitor the operation of equipment used to deliver oxygen,
aerosolized medications, and high humidity.
